Sorrows visit all of us in many forms: job layoffs, doctor reports, divorces, foreclosures, prison sentences, natural disasters, or deaths of loved-ones. But sometimes it is through brokenness that God can reach deepest into a heart. Beth and Dave Weikel help readers follow Jesus, leading all who will follow through the way of suffering that God's Son knows so intimately, and into his very real, here-and-now hope.

If you are struggling to make it through this painful life, let Dave and Beth lead you gently down The Way of Hope. They know, they understand. They have been down many painful paths, whereas most of us have only had to travel one or two. They are so tender and encouraging, but also very real. Emotional wounds bleed too, and they will take you to the one and only God who “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

The Way of Hope: Growing Close to God through Loss is an outstanding book that guides readers through dealing with loss. The authors, Beth and Dave Weikel, remind us that “God is capable of bringing life from loss” if we will only let Him.

As the authors share their own walk through a series of devastating losses, they offer tools, questions, and activities for readers to use in their own recovery journeys. As I read this book, I found myself jotting down quote after quote that touched me in some way. Each time the authors addressed an aspect of loss, they referenced scripture to illustrate their points and show how much can be learned in the process of living through loss.

This book is interactive and best read slowly– allowing for reflection — and with quick access to a Bible and journal. Chapters include activities and questions to help readers focus on a “God-centered reality.” The Way of Hope is very well written and the authors make use of numerous analogies to get across their points. One of the two appendices at the end of the book crystallizes the main topics in the book by listing sections for readers to take inventory of their personal areas in need of growth.

Though it’s been almost six years to the day since I lost my mother – to a fast moving disease that took her much too young — there are days that I am still deeply affected by the loss. There are days that I fight it and decry the unfairness of it and question, question, question God about it. The Way of Hope absolutely provided me concrete steps to take in dealing with my loss and above all else, the authors encouraged me to remember that “Nothing gets healed if the Lord is not involved.”
